Surf Lessons FAQ's | Surf Camps FAQ's - Maui Surfer Girls

Please bring a sturdy swimsuit or board shorts, sunscreen, towel and water. (Reef-Safe NOTE: Please bring sunscreen that DOES NOT contain OXYBENZONE if possible – recent findings have discovered that it is harmful to corals and marine life) If you have (non-cotton) leggings bring them to the class. Leggings are helpful to prevent the rash from the softop & sunburns on the back of the legs. Otherwise our surf school provides bodyglide anti-chafe stick.

Softtop surfboard (please specify if you prefer a hard top only if you have experience surfing on a hardtop), long-sleeve rash guard, booties, personalized surf coaching, juice and sticker.

Our Maui surf school is based 8 miles south of Lahaina at a beautiful stretch of coastline called “1000 Peaks” or Ukumehame Beach Park.

If you sign up for a 1 person group lesson, and you end up being the only person in the class, you will be notified by 5pm the day before your lesson, with the option to switch to a group lesson at a different time, or upgrade to a private lesson (for an additional fee).

Yes! We can work with larger groups. Depending on the size and age ranges of your group, you may be split into smaller groups for the lesson. Please email [email protected] to check for availability and group rate pricing.
A minimum of two weeks is preferred for groups of that size, or longer during peak travel times of summer, winter or spring break.

5 years old is our youngest. Please note that 11 and under are required to book a private lesson, and children must be 13 or older to join a group lesson. Our oldest has been 75 (It’s never too late to learn!)

Yes, we do have a swim requirement. You must know how to tread water. Our surf break is fairly far out in the water, so being a strong swimmer and being comfortable in the ocean is extremely helpful.

Smaller children (under 70 pounds) will likely tandem surf with their instructor (riding on the front of their instructors' board) and they are welcome to wear floaties or a lifejacket for extra buoyancy and warmth.

Yes of course! We suggest a private surf lesson for intermediate surfers so we can spend 1 on 1 time progressing your skills. A majority of our students are 1st timers. Our coaches are still great at coaching to everyone’s individual abilities in a group class. Just note when you register that you have surf experience and prefer a hard top surfboard.

So we can outfit you with the right sized surfboard.

We recommend taking non-drowsy Dramamine or anti-seasick medication. People have gotten seasick on a surfboard, but it’s preventable.

Everyone has their own learning progression with the sport. We do our very best to set you up for success with the right sized gear and personalized coaching. For some students they get up on their first try and others may take a second lesson to get up. We have a great success rate with our students!

Yes, we offer 10% off multiple surf lesson bookings. We can certainly tailor a private surf lesson package for intermediate surfers. Please email [email protected] to set something up.

Please contact us directly for more information.
Max weight limit 200 lbs.
We require that the students are comfortable treading water, but they are welcome to wear a life jacket.

Free Airport Shuttles provided on Opening Day: 10 am–3 pm / Closing Day: 9 am–12 noon*

Please fly into and out of Kahului, Maui (airport code OGG).

Before the camp start date, you will receive an email link to our travel form. Please complete our travel form with your airline itinerary so we can arrange your airport shuttle.

If arriving by plane, please arrive before 3pm on opening day. A staff member will be at baggage claim to pick you up. If you arrive later than 3pm we can still pick you up but you may miss Opening Circle depending on arrival time.
If arriving by car, please be at Camp Olowalu by 3pm for our 4pm opening circle. (You do not NEED a car for this camp, on-island transportation is included in the cost)

*If departing by plane, please schedule a departure of (ideally) 11:30am or later. On Closing Day, all airport shuttles leave camp at 9am which gets you to the airport around 9:30am at the earliest. We recommend giving yourself 2 hours before your departure in case the airport lines are long. If you want to get there with less time ahead of your flight, Maui Surfer Girls can’t be held responsible for any missed flights. If your departure is earlier than 11:30am, you will need to schedule a ride
share pick-up (Uber, etc.) for yourself from Camp Olowalu.

*On closing day, the last airport drop-off time is at 12 noon. If you have a late departure and want to explore the island a little before you leave, we can drop you off in Kahului to rent a car or Pa’ia (10 minutes from airport) to do some shopping/dining. You will be in charge of your afternoon/evening transportation back to airport. Ride services such as Uber are typically always available.

Please note that if you arrive a day or more before camp start date or stay after the camp closing date, you will be in charge of your own accommodations for those nights. We can coordinate with you for a
pick-up or drop-off in Kahului on Opening/Closing Days.

Email [email protected] for any travel questions.

You can also arrive by car. Campers will need to arrive before our 4pm Opening circle on opening day. Campers can be picked up before noon on closing days. We will contact you a month prior to camp to coordinate all the travel details, but feel free to contact us with any further questions.
