Maui Surfer Girls: How did you come up with this idea?

Jenn: This business actually began as a monthly subscription box for girls. The idea was to promote a love of the mail and to share the “Aloha, Beauty and Wonder” of life in Hawaii with other girls around the world.

Reiko Rose is my 4-year old daughter and the business idea is that she is a penpal of sorts, who sends a monthly note about life in a girl’s world in Hawaii. Every girl’s box comes with an origami project, a postcard to send a friend, and box full of goodies that follow a monthly theme (Day at the Beach, the Luau, the Obon Season, etc.). This box comes in 3 month and 6 month subscriptions and is available on our website

From this girls box I realized that there should be a gift box for the moms (or any woman) as well. I wanted to focus on a box that contained mostly made-in-Hawaii items, and to help promote other Hawaii small-businesses like mine. The WAHINE box gives customers a chance to see some of the wonderful items that are made in our islands, and if they love something that was in their quarterly box – they can order more from those companies.

All of our Women’s Campers received this fun goodie bag filled with items from Reiko Rose, prAna and Coola Suncare

MSG: Is this a full-time job for you?

Jenn: This is not my full-time job but I wish it were! I have four children, work part-time in an office, and do Reiko Rose every spare moment I get. Phew – the life of a mompreneur!

MSG: What’s it like to start a business on Maui?

Jenn: Starting a business on Maui is awesome because there are so many niches that can be filled here that aren’t being filled. You can come up with a great idea, and make it happen! It’s a very inspirational place as well – so it’s easy to keep being creative. Your customers hopefully feel that creativity and passion come through in the product – in this case, when they open their mailbox!

Mahalo to Reiko Rose for our Pineapple Lotion and Orchid Hair Clips in our Surf Camp Welcome Bags!

MSG: How do you find the products that you feature in your box?

Jenn: To find new products, I keep my eyes and ears peeled for small business local vendors, everywhere I go around the island! It’s a great feeling to promote the awesome things that others are passionately creating.

Besides featuring products from others – we hand-make some of the things in our boxes. In the girl’s box, I create the monthly origami project, some of the jewelry and the hair clips. In the women’s box, I make the silk orchid hair clips myself. Reiko Rose boxes are most definitely packed with Love and Aloha.

Mahalo to Jenn & Reiko Rose for sponsoring our Goodie Bags and best of luck to everyone entering!
